AA members will try an assure the newcomer that the program is spiritual but not religious. They point that AA gives you the freedom to have any concept of a Higher Power that you choose. But still, the very notion that you must “believe” in a Higher Power is a turn-off for many people.

The fact that AA permits its members to conceive of God in any way they want irks some religious leaders who want control of the idea of God and of how God wants us to behave. AA is not a “religion” because there is no authority who can designate anything as blasphemy or as sacrilegious.
