However, if you are antagonistic to religions or you are turned off by the frequent references to God, it may be hard for you to feel positive or friendly towards the AA program. They conclude that AA is a religious cult, or more politely, that the AA approach will not work for them because they can’t bring themselves to take this “God stuff” seriously.Zeus

AA members will try an assure the newcomer that the program is spiritual but not religious. They point that AA gives you the freedom to have any concept of a Higher Power that you choose. But still, the very notion that you must “believe” in a Higher Power is a turn-off for many people.

The role of God and the importance of a Higher Power is the subject of many deep philosophical and psychological discussions; it is not merely a theological distinction. NatarajaBut don’t overlook the fact that AA allows you to come up with any notion of God that works for you; this too has contributed to people’s willingness to accept the program. The fact that AA permits its members to conceive of God in any way they want irks some religious leaders who want control of the idea of God and of how God wants us to behave. AA is not a “religion” because there is no authority who can designate anything as blasphemy or as sacrilegious.
